PRUNE: Introduce yourself to our readers.
MIA: I am Mia Martina; a multi-platinum singer-songwriter, author, and business woman.
PRUNE: At what age did you start pursuing music?
MIA: My first singing lesson was at the age of 4.
PRUNE: In late 2010, your REMIX of “Stereo Love” dropped and became the song of the century. How did this single change your career?
MIA: To be honest, it was the craziest moment. I was working on my first album when the opportunity from Ultra Records came, and my then-Radio Tracker felt it was the perfect match for me. When I heard the song for the first time, I knew it was going to be big, I felt it, but I had no idea it was going to be one of the biggest songs in the world. It all happened so quickly after that. I toured the world consecutively for 2 years and today I’m still requested to sing this song everywhere.
PRUNE: Are there any lingering moments from “Stereo Love” that still impact you almost ten years later?
MIA: Yes; the stories I hear from my fans all over the world! A lot of people have a special connection to this song and hearing their stories always gives me that nostalgia.
PRUNE: Your debut album, Devotion, released less than a year later. Talk to us about that album and what it meant to you.
MIA: That album was my baby. I felt it was really who I was at the time as an artist. I was able to infuse so many different genres from all around the world and it was definitely a labour of love. Being my first album, I wasn’t as experienced as I am today, and I just had that passion that you get when you’re so excited to be working on your lifelong dream.
PRUNE: Today, we have new music, including your most recent single - “Different Kind of Love”. Talk to us about this song.
MIA: Different Kind of Love, I feel, is today’s version of Devotion. It has that ethnic, soft, sultry vibe that I love doing so much. It reminds me of a modern version of Devotion and it’s just a glimpse of what’s to come.
PRUNE: Can fans expect more music soon?
PRUNE: If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
MIA: This is a very hard one. I would have to say Sade! I just love, love, love her timelessness and I feel like she is always ahead of her time!
PRUNE: Who are some of the musical icons you’ve looked up to throughout your career?
MIA: Definitely Cher, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Beyoncé - they are all such powerful, talented women.
PRUNE: Favorite song to belt in the car?
MIA: Definitely “I Have Nothing” by Whitney.
PRUNE: Artist that everyone should be on the lookout for?
MIA: Definitely Nhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/7aFTOGFDEqDtJUCziLVsVC?si=6kw4lRF2QA2cLGlqpKPszAao - love her vibe and sounds. She's one to watch, for sure!
