Do it like Dounia

PRUNE: Introduce yourself to our readers:

DOUNIA: I’m Dounia, Moroccan and New York raised, being as human and as real as possible while making good music.

PRUNE: You began releasing music in 2017 and quickly found success. Talk to us about your journey.

DOUNIA: It’s been blessed. The work runs far beyond 2017 but it’s wild that that was my first EP - really puts things into perspective. God just put all the right stepping stones in front of me and I have no doubt my journey will make just as much sense.

PRUNE: When did your love for music and songwriting begin?

DOUNIA: Ever since the womb, probably. I’ve been writing songs since I was like 8. I started playing guitar and putting instrumentals behind the lyrics in middle school. I’ve always loved writing and music was the most fun way to do it. I recorded my first music video–now deleted–at 14 years old. It’s something so innate and embedded in me. That’s how I know it’s special.

PRUNE: Your debut album, The Scandal, released less than a month ago. Talk to us about this album and the story.

DOUNIA: It details stories I went through this year with “love”, navigating this career, friendships, failed friendships, etc. Life is constant self-discovery; I’m grateful I get to fully express those narratives. It’s vulnerable and still flexed up. I know my next project will be even more personally evolved. Let me not get ahead of myself. Life is cool though.

PRUNE: What has the response to this album been thus far?

DOUNIA: It’s been amazing. I’m building a truly special crowd that genuinely loves and cares for the music - nothing else. That’s priceless. Their reactions are nothing but positive because they know it’s honest. We have a trust and true love for each other. New people checking it out are loving it, too. It’s all blessed.

PRUNE: Talk to us about your style and aesthetic. How would you describe your overall brand?

DOUNIA: I’m truly myself. I try to not get too attached or portray any image. I know the music holds its own weight so I’m not scared to experiment with my aesthetic, or whatever. I love looks, fashion, all of that. I’m a very go-with-the-flow type of person and that also translates to my style.

PRUNE: Designer you are currently loving?

DOUNIA: Myself! @Bubblescotch is in the works to expand to a lot of shit that I love to have on my body.

PRUNE: You are vocal about body positivity and self-love. Advice to those still learning to be comfortable in their own skin?

DOUNIA: We’re all human, we need to embrace that. Embracing existence in general will zoom your perspective out in regards to self-image and insecurity. Don’t be too hard on yourself for feeling negatively about anything, the lows are also a means to a high. Positive affirmations go a long ass way. Positive thoughts manifest like thoughts. Be assertive about your self-love and confidence.

PRUNE: Favorite song to sing along to? Besides yours, of course.

DOUNIA: I’ve honestly been loving silence recently, but my best friend and I just bumped the last Cardi B album in the car and re-realized how hard it goes.

PRUNE: Any trend you wish would *disappear*

DOUNIA: I don’t see any trends I don’t like. I love people having fun and being happy. Maybe judging each other - that’s always a trend I’m down to dump.

PRUNE: Dream music collab?

DOUNIA: I want Eminem on a hook and a joint project with Drake.

PRUNE: Any upcoming projects we should know about?

DOUNIA: A few major collabs are coming out. Something with my friends Skrillex, Marian Hill and Bulow.

PRUNE: Where can we follow you on socials?
