NEW MUSIC: Christian French "Heavy Snow"

PRUNE: When did you first discover your love for music?

CHRISTIAN: I was in 6th grade choir, and my friend came in and had learned ‘Love Song’ by Sara Bareilles on piano and played it for me.. I was so impressed that I went home and learned if from YouTube as well. I started loving piano and began singing with the covers I was learning, and would spend hours at the piano recording it to get it just right. I really began to love it and it slowly grew from a hobby into something that I was really passionate about.

PRUNE: What was your first Soundcloud cover that gained recognition?

CHRISTIAN: I think my first few covers got some views just because people at my school wanted to figure out if I could sing or not - they got a few hundred streams, and then I gained a few local followers.

After that, my most successful covers were a David Guetta’s ‘Titanium ft. Sia’, a medley of Drake’s ‘Take Care’ album, Kygo’s ‘Stole The Show’, and a few Coldplay covers. These got a few thousand views, but I was still only recording with the voice memos app on my iphone.

PRUNE: Your first single, “By Myself” was streamed over 13.8 million times. Talk to us about the song and how it changed your career.

CHRISTIAN: I really felt this was going to be a great song right when I started writing it. I vividly remember sitting in my frat house dorm room writing the hook -  I had just gotten out of a serious relationship, and meant what I was writing about at the time. Once I brought what I had written to Triegy, he laid down the catchy vocal chops from my vocals, and I knew we had something cool.

It’s kind of a direct “i don’t need anyone but myself” feel-good song that can resonate with those going through a

similar situation, which I think heavily contributes to the song’s success.

It’s crazy how well the song is doing; it’s been out for 2 years, and I am very thankful for the impact that this song has had on my career.

PRUNE: Your current single “Heavy Snow” is your first release with Disruptor Records. What does this song mean to you?

CHRISTIAN: This song helped pull me out of a very low point in my life. I was consistently trapped inside my head battling anxious thoughts, and it had gone on for entirely too long. I wasn’t experiencing life like I knew I should and it literally felt like there was a fog between me and reality. I was over it.

I went back home to Indiana to reflect for a bit and began writing this song with the parallel of being stuck in a heavy snow storm. Writing this song released a lot of the built up weight I was feeling, and I started feeling a lot better. I decided to take a different perspective and focus on the good instead of dwelling on the bad, and it literally changed my life.

PRUNE: “Heavy Snow” touches on anxiety and personal struggles. What has the response to this song been?

CHRISTIAN: What means even more to me is how fans are receiving the song and how much it's helping them. I’ve been sent some long messages explaining how much ‘heavy snow’ had helped them get through a tough time in their life, and to me, that is all I could ever ask for as an artist. As long as I’m positively impacting the lives of those listening, I feel like I’m on the right track.

I've received nothing but love and acceptance with this song’s release. I'm so thankful for the type of fans that I have.

PRUNE: You’re currently on tour. Talk to us about your favorite memories thus far.

CHRISTIAN: I’m in the van right now looking out the window at a crazy Arizona landscape - I’ve really loved taking in the beauty of the country as we go.

Obviously performing is of my favorite memories as well. The venues I’ve had the privilege to play this tour have been massive, and the fans have made me feel like I’m a headliner rather than an opener.

Lastly, I’ve gotten the chance to meet a bunch of fans that before I had only talked to on social media. No matter what kind of night I’m having, I always leave the meet & greet feeling happy and rejuvenated. So much love!

PRUNE: What can we expect from Christian French for the remainder of 2019?

CHRISTIAN: Some consistent, spicy music is definitely on the menu. I really like this next group of songs we have, and I can’t wait until they’re finally out for the world to hear. The latest single “breaking all the rules” is out now, and the video is coming out soon! Along with that, you can plan on catching me on my first headlining run this fall.

So far, 2019 has been full of new learning experiences that I feel are creating the person and artist I want to be. I’m so ready for what the rest of 2019 is gonna bring.

PRUNE: Fun fact that most fans don’t know about you?

- I’ve played travel hockey all of my life and also played in college. Before I did music for a living this is what I spent all of my time doing outside of school.

- I was in school studying to be a doctor. I was in medical classes starting as a freshman in high school - it was always what I wanted to do until i fell in love with music.

- I love spicy food. Like really spicy food. I’ve had to cut back because spicy foods aren’t good for your vocal cords, but I’m down to try almost anything (I hope i don’t eat my words)

PRUNE: Celebrity crush?

CHRISTIAN: Will Ferrell all day. Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, Old School, Land of the Lost, etc - I love all of it

Honorable Mention: Spongebob

is and forever will be my favorite cartoon

PRUNE: Dream collaboration?

CHRISTIAN: Writing a song with John Mayer. He’s been my favorite artist since I was like 8 years old, and he has a heavy influence on my music. If I had the chance to write a song with him, that would be the most full-circle experience and I’d be forever grateful.

PRUNE: Artist that everyone should check out?

CHRISTIAN:Pink Sweat$, Lucky Daye, Cautious Clay, Matt Maeson, SG Lewis
