Interview by Dylan Rubinstein @thedylanjader
PRUNE: Tell us about yourself. What should the world know about Kevin Garrett?
KEVIN: I’m just a guy from Pittsburgh who makes songs really. The world probably knows everything it wants about me at this point I think.
PRUNE: How did you get your start in the music industry?
KEVIN: I started touring with my friend James Vincent McMorrow who took a shot on me with no music out. Then I released a song called Coloring that people seem to enjoy.
PRUNE: HOAX is your first full length solo album and is out today. What can fans expect from this album?
KEVIN: It’s sad, but hopefully it’s also reflective for anyone who wants to listen. This album has been a long time coming for me, and I’m excited to be able to share it with everyone.
PRUNE: What inspires you as an artist?
KEVIN: Other people who can create something out of nothing are always inspiring. I tend to draw from my personal experiences in my music, so I would say those are the main source of influence on my work.
PRUNE: You’ve worked with multiple mega-stars, including Beyonce. How did “Pray You Catch Me” impact your career?
KEVIN: PYCM definitely opened a lot of collaborative doors. I’ve met a few artists and producers who want to work with me because of that song. It’s crazy to think my name is on her album. Truly a surreal moment.
PRUNE: How does writing music for yourself differ from writing music for other artists?
KEVIN: I don’t give as much of me in sessions for others. I like to try and embody their experiences and let them drive the boat. Otherwise I don’t think we’re being as honest as we could be. I love when I can work with the actual artist too.
PRUNE: You’ve performed at major festivals including Bonnaroo. Do you plan on doing a solo tour with this album?
KEVIN: I am going on tour in the spring for the album. It’s called The Hoax Tour and it’s in North America. I can’t wait to get back on the road and play these new songs for everyone. It’s a real fulfilling and humbling feeling to see people singing along to your songs.
PRUNE: Top three current artists:
KEVIN: Big Thief
PRUNE: Dream collaboration?
KEVIN: This is tricky like the last question because I have a lot of favorites but Anderson Paak would be so cool. There’s quite a list of people I’d love to work with.
PRUNE: Favorite career memory thus far?
KEVIN: I’m not even sure. I’ve gotten to sing with some great artists and that’s always a fun feeling to be acknowledged by your peers.
PRUNE: Favorite show to binge watch?
KEVIN: I really like Schitt’s Creek. I heard it’s almost over and that’s upsetting. This Is Us is another one but you can’t binge watch that show because one episode makes me cry ugly tears.
PRUNE: What can we expect from you for the rest of 2019?
KEVIN: I’m gonna be on the road more and I’m gonna write some more music. I’m just glad this album is out. Can’t wait to keep moving.
PRUNE: Where can fans follow you on social media?
KEVIN: I can be followed at @kevinogarrett. That’s me. Some people still tag me in Kevin Garnett things so don’t be confused if you see that.
