Prune: Your hit single “I Like Me Better” has vaulted over 250 million Spotify plays and your single with DJ Snake “A Different Way” has over 55 Million plays – meaning, you consistently draw millions of listeners in. How did you find success?
Lauv: It’s crazy. I’ve been making music my whole life and been dreaming of this stuff since I was a kid. Honestly, I’ve always just been so connected to the actual process of creating that even throughout all of the years of nothing happening. I just kept going and going and going, and then finally stuff started to happen. It’s incredible, indescribable really, but I still just get up every day focused on the next thing.
Prune: Where do you find inspiration to create hit after hit?
Lauv: For me, it’s always this challenge to myself to feel like I’m creating something more honest than the last thing I made, something that makes me a little bit uncomfortable, or something that just feels like I’m progressing through life in some way. It’s also just not thinking too much, just creating in the moment and finding truth.
Prune: On top of writing your own music, you’ve also co-written and produced other big hits including Cheat Codes ft. Demi Lovato’s “No Promises” and Charlie XCX’s “Boys”. Is the process of writing for yourself and writing for another artist similar, or completely different?
Lauv: It really depends. Sometimes a song might start from something personal to me, but you can’t control the creative process, so it might morph into something totally different. I just find that all of the songs that I put out are straight up about my life and stuff that I’ve been through. I have to feel really connected to the song to feel the need for it to be mine.

Prune: You recently finished opening for Ed Sheeran’s Asia tour. What was it like working alongside Ed Sheeran?
Lauv: Ed is beyond an inspiration. He is honestly one of the most talented and unique performers of all time, not to mention he’s one of the most down to earth people I’ve ever met. The tour was a big life-changing moment for me playing in arenas for the first time, being in Asia for the first time and doing it all with Ed. I’m still processing it all.
Prune: You headlined a sold-out US Tour earlier this year and now you’re off to your first world tour in 2018. What has been the wildest experience on tour to date?
Lauv: When I played my mall shows in Manila, I guess we had to have a whole security crew the whole time. I honestly didn’t really understand until the moment I stepped off stage. We started getting chased and literally had to sprint out of the mall to not get mobbed (in a good way). I never experienced anything like that before. It was really crazy, but really cool because everyone knew the words to all of the songs. They were so passionate and have been some of my biggest supporters since the beginning. I wanted to give everyone hugs.
Prune: You are non-stop traveling. Have you learned any tips or life hacks for travelers?
Lauv: You have to make a firm decision to tackle jet lag on day 1 in a new place. no exceptions, trust me. Also, don’t be too lazy to see the things when you’re in a city. I’ve been there and I always regret it.

Prune: Any Culture shock experiences on tour?
Lauv: Exploring Mumbai. Going to the markets and experiencing the everyday culture and how hectic it is in the streets. It was like the most organized chaos I might’ve ever experienced.
Prune: Who was your last text message from and what did it say?
Lauv: hi this is your uber driver. i am outside here. thanks
Prune: If you could go to dinner with any celebrity, dead or alive, who would it be?
Lauv: Probably Jim Carrey.
Prune: What is the last video you watched on YouTube?
Lauv: It was a video on how to install a new plugin I got.
Prune: How would you describe your everyday style?
Lauv: Comfortable. Fairly simple with the occasional random, goofy stuff. I like interesting fits, fabrics and textures. Blue things. Strap on vans.
Prune: Any words of wisdom to share?
Lauv: In life, figure out what really matters to you, and what doesn’t. Be honest with yourself. Stay connected to that. Share with people. Eat papaya salad.
