Prune: You star in Freeform’s newest show, Famous in Love. Talk to me about the show as a whole, and about your part as Alexis.

NK: Famous in Love is a show about young Hollywood and all of the craziness that goes on behind the scenes of young Hollywood. I play a famous actress named Alexis Glenn. When you first see her, she’s really on a mission to keep her career going strong. She’s also in competition with Bella’s (Thorne) character Paige for the lead role of the movie Locked.

Prune: Growing up in LA, you’ve had a first-hand look at the Hollywood lifestyle. Did that help you at all when filming the show?

NK: Absolutely. Especially with my character. She’s very reminiscent of your typical Hollywood actor in a sense. I definitely got a taste of the Alexis Glenn’s growing up.

Prune: Alexis is the “villain” of the cast. What is it like to play that kind of role?

NK: Luckily, she’s not as stereotypical Hollywood as you would imagine. She definitely has an edge to her. She has a lot of comedic elements to her, which I think come from the fact that she’s so overdramatic and ridiculous. That’s a lot of fun. I love her for so many reasons, she has so many layers.

Prune: Aside from acting, you also direct and produce. What are your favorite projects that you’ve worked on so far?

NK: I just finished directing a short film, La Douleur, and I filmed that while we were shooting Famous in Love. I don’t know why I did that, I didn’t sleep. I feel like that’s a project where I really started to figure out what my style is as a director, so it’s really exciting for me to watch it as a finished product.

Prune: What is the best piece of advice you’ve received in terms of your career?

NK: I love that question. The best advice I’ve received has probably been listen to what everyone tells you and take it all in, but pick and choose what works for you. You don’t have to listen to every single thing everyone says just because they are more successful than the next person. It’s up for you to decide what pieces of advice work for you.

Prune: Besides Famous in Love, what show can you not get enough of?

NK: You’re going to laugh at me, but right now I’m totally binging Locked Up. It’s a docuseries about Prison. I love it.

Prune: What is your favorite story from being on set?

NK: This is a good one. One day we were filming and we all happened to be there, which doesn’t happen as often as we’d like. Pepi and I were hanging out in her trailer all day waiting for our scene, and we decided to go watch what they were shooting. Carter and Bella were in the middle of shooting a rather steamy scene, and we walked in in the middle. We were watching it on the monitor and it was so uncomfortable but because it was so hot and steamy we had to leave and go back to the trailers.

Prune: Who inspires you as an actress?

NK: I’ve been really inspired lately by Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. I think their career trajectories would be a dream.

Prune: Describe your taste in music.

NK: I really like old school music. I love music from the 50’s and 60’s. I can never find anything that’s a combo between that and today, but the best examples I can give are Leon Bridges and Lana Del Ray.

Prune: Outside of the Hollywood world, what are your hobbies?

NK: Just the normal stuff. I love getting my friends together and doing game nights. I’ve been getting really into improv-comedy lately, so my friends and I have been doing that non-stop. Usually if I’m not working, im doing something creative like writing or directing.

Prune: You’re super into fashion, but what is your everyday go-to look?

NK: My every day go to look is a pair of jeans, a t shirt, black booties, and a fur coat. I love them, I’m kind of addicted.

Prune: What are your three favorite trends of the moment?

NK: I’m really into jeans that aren’t hemmed at the bottom, and are frilly. I’m loving the body suits right now, the mesh ones with a little crop top on top. Oh, and I love the matching sets with cool patterns.

Prune: Now time for fashion pruning. What trend would you like to get rid of?

NK: That’s hard, there are so many horrible trends. When fishnet stockings under jeans go past the waist, and are visible with a crop top, it’s trashy.
