Prune: You’ve been releasing music since 2015, but your most recent EP, Overthinking, has given you great success. Talk to me about this journey.

CR: I wasn’t expecting this. I’ve always had such a passion for music. When I worked on Overthinking, I wasn’t sure what sound I wanted. I had so many ideas and so many different things I liked. I am so proud of what we have created and it ended up taking a mind of its own and turning into something I really was grateful for. I released the music video for Anchor, which is incredible, it’s been such an amazing journey all together.

Prune: The EP has five songs. How did you put together this project and choose each song?

CR: I just kept writing with someone that I adore and we came across all the songs. We had to figure out which ones we wanted and what the sound should be like. I just loved every single song. I couldn’t live without one, and I couldn’t have any more. It just felt perfect the way it was.

Prune: The cover art is also unique. What does the color splatter represent?

CR: When I had the idea, nobody else could understand the concept. My best friend Brandon, who is a photographer, completely understood the idea the second I told him. I didn’t have the title for the album yet, but because every song was so different, I wanted each song to represent a different emotion. I thought of how colors are associated with emotions, and that is how I came up with the idea. It was funny because we tried rainbow confetti, milk with food dye, powder, and paint. The colored powder won by so much, it captured the energy and thoughts.

Prune: Your current single is titled Anchor. Talk to me about that song.

CR: Everyone was actually telling me not to release that one as my first single. I’m someone who stands by my vision. I knew exactly what I wanted. There was something about it, it’s an introduction to who I am. That song’s message is so important, especially these days. The message is about someone holding you back, and realizing you are in control of your emotions and that you can decide what negativity comes into your life.

Prune: How old were you when you first started making music?

CR: In second grade, I got a guitar and started making songs about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Prune: How has your life changed since finding success in the industry?

CR: I love everything about the industry even though it’s crazy and so overwhelming. You have to work so hard to be seen and have your voice heard. There is something about it that is so addicting to keep working and you can actually visibly see it paying off now because of social media. You can see it spread more and more and that is the most rewarding part for me. I love being heard.

Prune: What is your favorite song off the EP? Ours is Surrender.

CR: I love that song. Oh gosh. The next song I am releasing is Surrender, so I’ll be with you on that one. I love all of them so much, so I constantly switching which one is my favorite.

Prune: What is your favorite thing about performing live?

CR: So many things. I love seeing people react to a song. Performing doesn’t compare to anything you’ve ever done. The energy you get before is crazy. I get so nervous and then I go on stage and a switch happens. Live music hits people so differently than hearing it through a speaker. You can feel the drums, you can feel the guitar, and that’s why you’ll see me performing with a band and actual instruments.

Prune: Who inspires you as an artist?

CR: Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift specifically stuck out to me because she wrote songs that were so personal. Even though it was personal to her, it seemed so personal to everyone else. For Christmas in second grade, my mom got me a little Taylor Swift guitar. I taught myself cords on it and started writing music.

Prune: What is your favorite song at the moment?

CR: I love Paramore. I love the song Hard Times right now, it’s so good and it’s so new for them.

Prune: What show are you currently binging?

CR: 13 Reasons Why. I love that show. I thought it was great. I am also, for the third time, watching Gossip Girl.

Prune: You’re very active on social media and often post videos for fans to hear you sing. How has social media helped shape your career?

CR: These days, I think social media helps everyone in such amazing ways. I really love seeing people react and having them tell me how much I’ve helped them. The personal part of it is what really made me want to write music for myself and for my fans. When I first started social media, I wasn’t expecting much, but people proved me wrong.

Prune: When can we expect to see you on tour?

CR: I’m hoping that I get to go on tour towards the end of this year. I will be writing soon, so I’ll be busy. If I can’t go on a full-blown tour, I’ll do shows here and there. I’m also releasing a lot of little music videos soon.
